Biography
Has a reserve keeper ever been so loved as Ashley Bayes? An importance presence in the dressing room, known for his exuberant personality, Bayes became a fan favourite despite only making 14 appearances for the club.
Bayes's spell at Boro was not, perhaps, what he had imagined it would be. First choice keeper after signing in the summer of 2008, Chris Day was brought in just a month or two later and would go on to become one of the club's finest ever shot-stoppers. For Bayes, it meant seasons languishing on the bench - but he remained in high spirits, and the fans loved him for it.
His final appearance came as a 90th minute substitute in the FA Trophy final at Wembley against Barrow, with Boro sadly unable to replicate the heroics of their previous triumphs in that competition.
After benchwarming throughout Stevenage's first Football League season, Bayes departed in June 2011 to begin his coaching career alongside playing duties at Basingstoke.
It followed an extensive career in the Conference and the lower reaches of the Football League. Beginning his senior career with Brentford in 1990, he had gone on to feature almost 600 times for various clubs, with particularly notable spells at Torquay, Exeter, Leyton Orient and Grays, where he played under Mark Stimson.
His move into coaching at the end of his playing days proved to be a success - after two years at Basingstoke, he took up a role at AFC Wimbledon in 2013, where he remained ten years later.
