Biography

Charles joined Stevenage at an odd time - the club having just won the Conference, he would have to make the step up from non-league and challenge key player Scott Laird for a position in the starting XI.

But, having moved to Stevenage for a five-figure fee from Ebbsfleet, Charles was keen to make an impact. And make an impact he did, remaining with the club for another five seasons and playing in both defence and attack.

Starting off by filling in for Laird at left-back when needed, the 'Eureka' moment came when Boro were scratching around for a last minute equaliser against MK Dons in the FA Cup. Only Graham Westley would have considered putting Charles up top, but it paid off handsomely as he grabbed the equaliser and the opportunity for Boro to go through on penalties.

From there, there was no turning back - the next few years would see Charles switch between centre back, left back and striker, with the squad numbers to match. He could score crucial goals - including another memorable one in the FA Cup, this time at Reading - and act as a dominant defender, known for his mazy dribbles up the pitch.

It was no surprise that both Westley and Smith kept the faith in Darius, as he signed a two-year contract extension in 2011 and eventually remained at the club until 2015, when he joined Burton on a free transfer.

Future moves would take him to AFC Wimbledon and Wycombe Wanderers, his status as a Football League player secured by the time he retired in 2022.

International honours were almost his, too, as he twice turned down call ups to the Grenada national team to focus on recovering from injuries - he had also featured for the England C team while at Ebbsfleet.
