Biography

Described by the Stevenage Gazette as one of the best defenders in the Southern League, Stevenage Athletic was Downes' first club and where he signed on as a professional in October 1972.

After Athletic played their final ever match in May 1976, Downes reunited with former Stripes coach Roy Johnson at Cambridge City, where he was reunited with fellow Stevenage players Drew Noble and Steve Mahoney.

Fast forward three years, and Downes was back playing for Stevenage again - this time for Stevenage Borough in their first season of senior football. Downes also featured regularly for Boro in 1980-81, their first United Counties League season, before leaving the club halfway through that campaign.
